If you would like to teach in Qatar, you should probably know that Qatar started a comprehensive education reform at the beginning of the new millennium known as “Education for a New Era”. It is aiming at introducing a modern, world-class education system based on best international practices combined with Qatar’s unique culture. “Education for a New Era” is built on four principles:
1) Autonomy: Allowing schools and teachers to be innovative in their approach to meeting the needs of individual students and parents within the framework of the curriculum standards.
2) Accountability: Implementing an objective and transparent assessment system to hold all school leaders, teachers and parents responsible for the success of students.
3) Variety: Encouraging different types of schools and instructional programs.
4) Choice: Allowing parents to select the school that best fits their children’s needs and seeking their input on important school decisions. Qatar follows a policy of compulsory education until the end of the elementary stage and free education to all its citizens. Basic education consists of the following stages: Elementary – 6 years, Middle School – 3 years and Secondary – 3 years.
Qatar has 113 elementary schools and 41 secondary schools for both boys and girls. Qatar also has private schools for all resident communities including British, Canadian and American schools.
